2020 Congressional Art Competition

COVID-19 Update: The due date for submissions for the 2020 Congressional Art Competition has been extended to May 28th.

Every year, Members of Congress sponsor a nation-wide arts competition for high school students. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our congressional district.

The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in the 9th District. Winning entries from each congressional district are hung in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year, and the winning student artists will be flown to Washington, D.C. to be recognized at an award ceremony.

Requirements:

Artwork must be two-dimensional. Each framed artwork can be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. In order to reduce out of pocket expenses for students, entries are not required to be framed, only matted. Even when framed, it must still measure no larger than the above maximum dimensions. No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds.

Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (it’s recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed)
  • Collages: must be two dimensional
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photographs

All entries must be an original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image will not be accepted. For more information on copyright laws, please click here.

Students from Washington’s 9th Congressional District who would like to participate must submit a completed Student Release Form (download it here) and a one-page description of the medium and the background of the piece along with their entry. All entries must comply with the competition guidelines.

Due to COVID-19 and Governor Inslee’s stay at home order, my office will only be accepting submissions digitally and will coordinate with the winning student how to collect the physical art piece to send to Washington, D.C.

Submissions are due by Thursday, May 28th. Please send the completed Student Release Form, a digital version of the art piece, and a brief description of the piece to Caitlyn.Cole@mail.house.gov.

Please note that the Student Release Form requires a signature from each student’s art teacher. The Congressional Institute is allowing an email from art teachers stating the student’s piece is original in concept in lieu of their signature.

NDAA Town Hall with Congressman Adam Smith

Last month, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was signed into law. As Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Smith played a central role in passing this bill that creates 12 weeks paid parental leave for all federal employees, repeals the unjust “widow’s” tax, and addresses our national security needs while supporting military personnel and their families. Come hear from Congressman Smith about the bill, his role as Chairman, and legislating during divided government.

Topics/Panels include:
- Government Contracting Essentials
- Discussions with Federal, State, and local government agencies facilitated by Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)
- Small business contractor success stories and lessons learned
- Networking

From Southbound on I-405:
Take Renton Exit 4, merge onto Sunset Boulevard, turn left at the first stoplight onto NE 3rd Street. Follow NE 3rd Street to top of hill. RTC is on the left side after you crest over the top of the hill. Turn left on Monroe Avenue NE to access the main entrance.
From Northbound on I-405:
Take Exit 4. After exiting, do not take the Maple Valley exit to the right. Stay to the left and take the Bronson Way exit to Renton. Turn right at bottom of the off-ramp. Continue to the next stoplight and turn right onto Sunset Boulevard. One block further at the stoplight, turn right onto NE 3rd Street. Follow NE 3rd Street to the top of the hill. RTC is on the left side after you crest over the top of the hill. Turn left on Monroe Avenue NE to access the main entrance.
Transit:
Metro bus 105 stops within 0.5 miles of the College. You can call METRO (206-553-3000) or check the METRO website’s Trip Planner for bus route schedules and times.
