Rep. Smith Expresses Support for Biden Administration’s Efforts to Secure Ceasefire Agreement

February 21, 2024

JORDAN – Today, Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Biden Administration to reach a mutual ceasefire agreement in Gaza that includes a pause in fighting and the release of hostages.

“The atrocities of the October 7th terrorist attacks, in which Hamas killed more than 1,200 and abducted more than 200 Israelis, should never be repeated. Hamas is a violent terrorist organization and I continue to support Israel in its mission to degrade Hamas and reduce the threat it poses to Israel and civilians in Gaza. Much more, however, must be done to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and displaced many more.

“We must take steps that bring us closer to the ultimate goal of creating a path to peace in the region that supports a future for the Palestinian people and security for Israel. That is why I strongly support continued efforts by the Biden Administration to reach a ceasefire agreement that would halt the fighting, secure the release of hostages, and allow for more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis.

“The current situation is not sustainable. The war and the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza have created an escalating regional conflict that threatens Israel’s long-term security, a plan for a two-state solution, and stability in the Middle East. In November, President Biden, in partnership with Qatar and Egypt, secured an agreement that led to a temporary ceasefire, the release of 50 hostages, and increased humanitarian aid for Gaza. I am grateful for these efforts, and I urge the administration to continue the ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring the remaining hostages home and begin to restore stability in the region.

“Reaching a mutual ceasefire agreement will require strong commitments from both sides of the conflict to ensure Israel’s safety and security, but it is imperative that the negotiations succeed. Continuing down the same path risks the safety of the remaining hostages, an even greater humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and a wider regional conflict that threatens U.S. national security interests. I urge the Biden Administration and partners in the region to continue with negotiations so that we can reach a mutual ceasefire agreement that is in the best interests of Israel, Palestinians, and stability and peace in the Middle East.”
