WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement:

"Freedom of the press is one of the cornerstones of our democracy, and it must not be compromised by political pressure.

"Sinclair’s decision to ban Jimmy Kimmel from its stations under pressure from Donald Trump’s Administration is censorship. Until this ban is lifted, I will not be doing interviews with Sinclair-owned media outlets.

"We cannot allow this kind of political interference in our free press."

“Political violence has no place in our democracy, and I fully agree with the portions of the Charlie Kirk resolution that condemn it. In this moment, the most important outcome of today’s vote is that the House of Representatives went on record against political violence.

“However, I strongly disagree with the way this resolution reads as an endorsement of Charlie Kirk’s worldview. We can condemn the violence committed against him while disagreeing with his positions and approach to political discourse.

"Freedom of speech also applies to people you disagree with, President Trump.

"Trump's FCC Chair publicly assailed Jimmy Kimmel for expressing his beliefs in a late-night monologue -- and hours later ABC and Disney pulled Kimmel's show off the air indefinitely.

"No presidential administration should use their power to silence dissent and ABC and Disney should not have bent the knee.

"A free and independent press is a cornerstone of our democracy. This incident sets a horrific precedent for broadcasting in the United States."

"Israel should implement a ceasefire in Gaza and massively increase the flow of humanitarian aid. They must also stop the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and take serious steps to reduce the violence there. I urge President Trump to directly appeal to Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli government to take these steps. If Israel does not take these steps, I believe it is time for the United States government to stop the sale of some offensive weapons systems to Israel as leverage to pressure Israel into taking these actions.

SEATTLE, WA – Today, Representative Adam Smith (WA-09) released the following statement:

“The advancement of the long-stalled E1 settlement project is deeply alarming and destabilizing. This plan, which would add 3,400 housing units near East Jerusalem, would effectively split the West Bank into two regions and make the prospect of a viable Palestinian state significantly more difficult.
