Rep. Smith Statement on U.N. Passage of Gaza Aid Resolution

December 22, 2023

SEATTLE, WA – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) issued the following statement regarding the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council’s adoption of a resolution calling for a surge in aid to civilians in Gaza.

“As I’ve said repeatedly, Israel has a right and duty to respond to the horrific terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas on October 7th and to do everything they can to ensure that Hamas is never able to commit such atrocities again. I also welcome today’s vote by the U.N. Security Council calling for  actions to enable rapid access to crucially needed aid to civilians in Gaza.

“As the Biden Administration has made clear, the United States will continue to stand strong with Israel. It is also critical to ensure that more humanitarian aid reach those who need it in Gaza. I urge Israel, Egypt, and the United Nations to do all they can to facilitate rapid, safe access for humanitarian response efforts. It is also essential for Israel to heed the urgings of the Biden Administration and do everything they can to take a more targeted approach against Hamas militants to reduce civilian casualties and, in doing so, advance the long-term security of Israel.”
