Rep. Smith Statement on Mental Health Awareness Month

May 2, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) released the following statement on Mental Health Awareness Month.

“In May, we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. This month is an opportunity for us to have honest conversations about mental health, reduce the stigma associated with mental health diagnoses, and advocate for treatment and recovery options.

“Last year, I spoke publicly for the first time about my own struggle with anxiety and depression, and my multi-year journey to find treatment. I was lucky enough to have the means to explore treatment options until I found something that worked for me - but that's not the reality for most people.

“The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that more than one in five adults in the United States live with a mental health condition, yet mental health care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.

“We must make mental health care more affordable and accessible for everyone who is struggling. I’m a longtime advocate for increased funding for mental health care, including Medicare for All, and I’m a strong supporter of creating and expanding behavioral health programs. That’s why I introduced the Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act, which would fund behavioral health crisis care centers that provide critical crisis stabilization services and wraparound support services to individuals experiencing a mental health or behavioral health crisis.

“As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to encourage everyone to have open and honest conversations with their friends and family about mental health. For anyone who is struggling, please reach out for help. Recovery is possible.”
