Social Security is a critical program that provides important support for millions of seniors. This week, I agreed to cosponsor the Strengthening Social Security Act, H.R. 3118, which would increase benefits for Social Security beneficiaries while also further strengthening the financial standing of the program's trust fund. This bill would phase out the current taxable cap to ensure that resources are available for future generations to receive the benefits they earned.

If a funding bill is not passed by 12am EST, the government will shutdown. A shutdown could have numerous effects in Washington State and across America. Social Security checks and benefits will continue to go out (although new applications could experience delays) and veterans' hospitals will remain open. However, many federal agencies will be closed, thousands of workers in the state will be furloughed, and financial supports for small businesses can be put on hold.

The Cost of Detention at Guantanamo Bay

Today, the House Armed Services Committee will debate the merits of continuing to operate an expensive and unnecessary detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GTMO). Recently, Ranking Member Adam Smith authored an oped, "An Exit Strategy from Detention at Guantanamo," laying out the reasons why the facility should be closed.

The Department of Defense Announced today that they approved nearly $91 million in grants to the Clover Park School District to "demolish and newly construct" Greenwood, Clarkmoor, and Beachwood Elementary Schools at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. In addition to the grants from DoD, the Clover Park School District and Washington State will provide $23 million to the effort.
