Republican leaders on the House and Senate Armed Services committees have been increasingly raising the alarm about the devastating impact that budget sequestration would have on the Defense Department. They are absolutely right to do so, but it's not just the Pentagon that would be devastated by sequestration.
Conveniently, the Republican leaders have also ignored both their own role in creating sequestration in the first place and the fact that their stubborn resistance to any increase in revenues is the biggest reason why sequestration is even a possibility.

The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute is currently accepting applications for its Angels in Adoption program that provides a way for Members of Congress to honor an individual, couple or organization from their state or district that has made a difference in the lives of children in need of a family to call their own. Past honorees include foster parents, adoptive parents, social workers, adoption advocates, judges, or foster care and adoption organizations.

Today, the Federal Housing Finance Agency announced changes to short sale policies that will make it easier for military homeowners with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages to honor their financial commitments when they are issued a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) order.


Changes to the short sale policies will alleviate some of the issues faced when a member of the armed forces receives a PCS order including the burden of having to sell their home in a different housing market.

Congressman Smith (WA-09) today congratulated the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD) for being awarded a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration to build or expand longitudinal databases and link them to education data.
The ESD will be expected to use the advanced databases to determine the effectiveness of workforce and educational programs and to better inform customers of training opportunities, employment services and unemployment insurance.

I have heard from several constituents regarding an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) I co-sponsored with Congressman Mac Thornberry that would modernize the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948. Unfortunately, recent articles have misinterpreted the intent and impact of the Thornberry-Smith amendment to the NDAA and I would like to take this opportunity to clarify misconceptions about what the amendment does.
